Our Family History

Founded in 2018 by our family’s first generation, Gaval Family Office now serves Gen 2 and Gen 3 with a clear focus: preserving and growing the legacy we’ve built together.

In 1950 the family acquired a large piece of land named Finca Los Tarros and started planting coffee, sugar cane and raw cane sugar (panela). Their first sugar harvest was in 1958-1959.

In the sugar harvesting season of 1969-1970, the family decided to formalize the business and named it Ingenio La Unión.

In 1983-1984 sugar harvesting season, Ingenio La Unión hit an all time record. In 1990, Ingenio La Unión started a commercial program with the sale of electricity using bagasse.

In 1986, the patriarch of the family alongside his two sons, founded a company dedicated to harvesting sugar (to sell it locally to other sugar mills) and started cultivating banana and plantain for export.

In 1990, ILU started a commercial program with the sale of electricity. They assembled the electrical plant and adapted the sugar mill in order to produce bagasse in the most efficient way.

In 2018 GAVAL Family Office was created to manage the financial and non-financial assets of the family.

To this day, both businesses are managed by a Board of Directors and Ingenio La Unión keeps hitting all time production records and is a company with very low levels of debt and a very stern dividend policy.

Through and approved and constantly revised Investment Policy, our Investment Committee has aligned the family values and ideals with our investments. We have invested in different regions around the world, mainly in Guatemala as we believe in investing in our country and community.
